    Formal Verification of Real-Time Function Blocks Using PVS

    A critical step towards certifying safety-critical systems is to check their conformance to hard real-time requirements. A promising way to achieve this is by building the systems from pre-verified components and verifying their correctness in a compositional manner. We previously reported a formal approach to verifying function blocks (FBs) using tabular expressions and the PVS proof assistant. By applying our approach to the IEC 61131-3 standard of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), we constructed a repository of precise specification and reusable (proven) theorems of feasibility and correctness for FBs. However, we previously did not apply our approach to verify FBs against timing requirements, since IEC 61131-3 does not define composite FBs built from timers. In this paper, based on our experience in the nuclear domain, we conduct two realistic case studies, consisting of the software requirements and the proposed FB implementations for two subsystems of an industrial control system. The implementations are built from IEC 61131-3 FBs, including the on-delay timer.     Optimization of a Fuel Assembly for Supercritical Water-Cooled Reactor CSR1000

    As one of the Generation IV nuclear reactors, the SCWR (supercritical water-cooled reactor) has high economy and safety margin, good mechanical properties for its high thermal efficiency, and simplified structure design. As the key component of nuclear reactor, the fuel assembly has always been the main issue for the design of the SCWR. The design of the fuel assembly for CSR1000 proposed by the Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC) has been optimized and presented in this study, which is composed of four subassemblies welded by four filler strips and guide thimbles arranged close together in the cross-shaped passage. Aiming at improving the hydraulic buffer performance of the cruciform control rod, the scram time and terminal velocity of control rod assembly were calculated to assess the scram performance based on the computational fluid dynamics and dynamic mesh method, and the mechanical property and neutronic performance of assemblies were also investigated. It has been demonstrated that the optimized fuel assembly had good feasibility and performance, which was a promising design for CSR1000

    Assessing the Impact of Lifestyle Interventions on Diabetes Prevention in China: A Modeling Approach

    China’s diabetes epidemic is getting worse. People with diabetes in China usually have a lower body weight and a different lifestyle profile compared to their counterparts in the United States (US). More and more evidence show that certain lifestyles can possibly be spread from person to person, leading some to propose considering social influence when establishing preventive policies. This study developed an innovative agent-based model of the diabetes epidemic for the Chinese population. Based on the risk factors and related complications of diabetes, the model captured individual health progression, quantitatively described the peer influence of certain lifestyles, and projected population health outcomes over a specific time period. We simulated several hypothetical interventions (i.e., improving diet, controlling smoking, improving physical activity) and assessed their impact on diabetes rates. We validated the model by comparing simulation results with external datasets. Our results showed that improving physical activity could result in the most significant decrease in diabetes prevalence compared to improving diet and controlling smoking. Our model can be used to inform policymakers on how the diabetes epidemic develops and help them compare different diabetes prevention programs in practice

    Abstract: The importance of microRNAs in various diseases has been demonstrated, but their potential role in the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis needs to further research. We have profiled changes in microRNA levels in human kidney proximal tubular cell line HK-2 with TGF-β treatment and identified significantly altered miRNAs. miR-129-5p, was one of the significant down-regulated miRNAs in experimental models. PDPK1 was a potential target gene of miR-129-5p and luciferase assay analysis identified PDPK1 as a new direct target gene of miR-129-5p. Further research indicated that miR-129-5p suppressed PDPK1 mRNA and protein levels in HK-2 cells. miR-129-5p inhibited EMT via PDPK1 in HK-2 cells. In a conclusion, our findings suggested that miR-129-5p may function as a suppressor in renal fibrosis by targeting PDPK1

    An HAP and UAVs Collaboration Framework for Uplink Secure Rate Maximization in NOMA-Enabled IoT Networks

    In this paper, we propose a high-altitude platform (HAP) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) collaboration framework in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) networks with the presence of an eavesdropping UAV. For the considered framework, we investigate the uplink secure transmission by optimizing channel allocation from UAVs to HAP, users’ power, and UAVs’ three-dimensional (3D) position. To solve this non-convex problem, we adopt the K-means cluster pair algorithm to divide paired users into different groups and each cluster can be served by a corresponding UAV. Then, the formulated optimization problem is decoupled into three subproblems and tackled iteratively based on the block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. Finally, simulation results verify that the proposed network architecture can achieve a higher secure rate, faster convergence evolution, and lower complexity in comparison with the current works
